During my herbalism course, there was a section on health care for pets. I’d like to share with you one of the recipes that I’ve made for our dog, Idgie. (Side note, “Idgie” is the name our daughter gave her, from a character in the movie “Fried Green Tomatoes.”) This recipe is good for dogs or cats.
This is a supplement that you can add to your existing pet food to help boost the nutrients. This recipe is from Rosemary Gladstar, a very well-known herbalist.
Ingredients:
• 1 cup Nutritional Yeast
• 3 tablespoons Spirulina
• 1/2 cup powdered milk
• 2 tablespoons Kelp powder
• 2 tablespoons Nettle powder
• 2 tablespoons Comfrey root powder
• 2 tablespoons Comfrey leaf powder
You can get these items at a health food store, order online, grow them yourself, or wildcraft them.
Directions:
Mix these ingredients all together.

The dosage is 2 heaping tablespoons per 50 pounds of body weight directly into the pet’s food each day. You can moisten with a small amount of water if needed. You may also have to adjust the recipe’s flavors if you have a picky eater.
I’ve started Idgie on 1 tablespoon with her morning meal, just to see how she adjusted to it. She eats it as it is without water or alterations. Now I give her 2 tablespoons per day.
A few notes:
Nutritional yeast provides minerals, protein, and is one of the richest sources of B vitamins. It helps with keeping your animals tick and flea free.
Spirulina is a rich source of protein, is high in B vitamins, and one of the richest sources of available chlorophyll, which helps cleanse and detoxify the animal’s system.
Kelp provides iodine, potassium, zinc, and selenium – which is especially good for the bones and thyroid.
Comfrey lessens joint pain, heals damaged tissue, heals torn and bruised ligaments and muscles, strains, bruises, and broken or fractured bones or joints.
Nettle is high in B vitamins, vitamin A, calcium, iron, potassium, silicon, magnesium, manganese, zinc, chromium and other vitamins and minerals.

If your pet has flea allergies, worm infestation, mange and skin-related problems, or is generally run down and in poor health, you can add 2 tablespoons of echinacea powder and 1 tablespoon of garlic powder to the mixture.
Here is to our pets’ good health!
