I’d like to share with you a recipe that I learned from my herbalism course, The Science & Art of Herbalism, taught by Rosemary Gladstar. It is a long-life elixir.

Rosemary says this is one of her favorite recipes and loves to give this as gifts. This elixir can be used by both females and males but is predominately a male tonic.

Ingredients: 1/2 part Saw Palmetto berries (berries are best used fresh because the dried berries will not have the same medicinal qualities) 2 parts Wild Yam root 1 part Sarsaparilla 2 parts Sassafras 1 part Astragalus 2 parts Fo-ti 2 parts Damiana 1 part Eleuthero 2 parts Ginger 2 parts Licorice 1 part Chinese Star Anise Panax Ginseng roots (2 nice sized roots per one quart of tincture) Brandy Black Cherry concentrate (not fruit juice)

You can use different herbs and proportions, but they need to be similar in properties and uses. Parts can be any weight. I used tablespoons for my parts, starting with 1/2 part being 1 tablespoon.

To make this, you start by making a tincture by putting all your herbs in a glass quart jar and then cover the herbs with brandy. Make sure there is about 1 to 2 inches of brandy above the herbs so that they are covered and saturated. Keep a lid on the jar.

Put your jar in a windowsill or someplace warm and sunny for 6 to 8 weeks. The longer this can macerate, the better. You will want to shake this daily and make sure the herbs stay covered with brandy. Then, strain out the herbs and keep the liquid. Hold on to those strained herbs for now because you can reuse them one more time.

For every 1 cup of tincture, add 1/2 cup of black cherry concentrate. Do not be tempted to add more concentrate because it can spoil.

Rebottle and shake well. At this time, you can also add back into the jar the ginseng roots. Your elixir is now ready to drink! Strain out the roots before they go into your drinking glass.

A daily dose is 1/8 cup (roughly 2 tablespoons). This herbal tonic will taste like a rich liquor and is so good for you.

Those herbs that you set aside can now be used one more time to start your second batch of tincture. Pull the ginseng roots out of the elixir and use those again as well. Enjoy!
