In the past, I've started seeds indoors during the month of February. Last year, after looking back at my notes, it looked like the seeds that were the most successful were started indoors in early March, so last year I started the seeds in March. I can say some were successful while other weren't. In fact, some were started even later in March and did well. So, this year I’m also starting the seeds in March.

To help them germinate, I use grow lights and heat mats.

A few weeks ago, I sat down and mapped out what I want to grow in the raised beds, herbal garden, and containers. Then, I got onto the Dave’s Garden website to determine the last frost dates and what percentage of chance I wanted to take. I settled on May 7 to plant outdoors and will be using frost covers like I did last year. The website to check your frost dates is here: https://davesgarden.com/guides/freeze-frost-dates/. You just need to enter your zip code.

With that in mind, I back dated when the seeds should be started indoors. If it says 4 to 8 weeks before last frost, and I’m picking May 7 as my last frost date, I backed that up to between March 12 and April 9 for that particular plant. I did this with all the seeds I want to start indoors and wrote down the dates to start each one. Looks like I will be starting some in early March and some in early April this year. I will update you again when I start the seeds.
