I wrote a blog on February 4 discussing my notes from last year’s garden and how I have been mapping out when to start seeds indoors per Dave’s Garden website (https://davesgarden.com/guides/freeze-frost-dates/) and the seed packets.
The progress I’ve made since then has included washing and sterilizing my seed starting trays, getting my grow station set up, and starting a few of the seeds on my chart.

The seed mix at this time does not have to be fancy because seeds don’t need living soil to germinate. I use a sterile coconut coir that needs to be damp and not wet. Don’t use dirt as a seed mix because this causes damping off (a fungal disease).
Moisten the soil before putting it in the cells. Plant the seeds at a depth of 2 to 3 times the width of the seed. Make 2 holes for 2 seeds in 1 cell. Don’t tamp down the soil too much and make sure you label as you go.
I created a seed tray chart to label when, where and what I planted in the cells.

Make sure you water from the bottom, in the tray, and never from the top.
Put the dome/lid on top and turn on the heat mats. You can turn on your grow lights at this time also and make sure they are about 2 inches above the cells.
