To start a worm farm, you want to begin with only one tray for now and work your way up. It could take a month or more before you need the next tray. The first tray needs a liner on the bottom so the worms don’t fall below into the collection tray, which collects the extra water and pours out of the spigot. The lining can be newspaper (not the glossy kind) or cardboard (they end up eating these things too). Then the worms need a bedding on top of the liner that is several inches thick, and should be made up of coconut coir and/or carbon materials such as leaves, shredded newspaper or straw.

Make sure the bedding is wet (about the consistency of a wrung-out sponge). If it is too wet, the worms can drown and if it is too dry, the worms will dry up. Like I said in my earlier post, it is a fine balance.

Once you have your worm farm's moist bedding, you can add the worms on top. After you add your worms, you need to wait 2 days to feed them because they will be a little stressed and need to become accustomed to their new bedding (which they will also eat). You might even notice some of the worms trying to escape. This is normal and you can gather them up and put them back in their tray.
