I recently got back from a trip to Greece with my mom and daughter. It was a three generation experience of a lifetime. One of the main things that I wanted to do while there was to visit an authentic Greek apothecary and purchase Greek Mountain Tea (Sideritis spp.) among other things. That visit did not disappoint!

The apothecary shop owner, Maria, told us she uses it for digestive issues and when she feels a cold coming on. It is a caffeine free herbal tea that is considered a safe tonic and can be taken daily. Research also shows that Greeks drink this tea to alleviate common cold symptoms, soothe sore throats, and relieve gastrointestinal disorders. It is also considered an excellent anti-inflammatory agent with high levels of antioxidants. Many locals believe the medicinal properties of regular tea drinking can boost the immune system, improve digestion, and promote overall well-being.

Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, recommended Greek mountain tea for its health benefits, particularly for boosting immunity and respiratory health. This ancient herbal tea, derived from the Sideritis plant, has been used for centuries in Greece for its medicinal properties. The tea is made from dried flowers, leaves, and stems.

Scientific studies of specific species support these healing properties:

In Greek, Sideritis is translated as "he who is made of iron." The Greek word for iron is sidero in English. The Sideritis genus, also known as ironwort or shepherd’s tea, is native to the rocky terrain of Greece’s mountains in higher elevations. This particular species that I purchased came from Mount Olympus. It has a citrusy, minty mild flavor.

If you are looking to add to your tea collection or apothecary, this would be one of the herbs that I recommend.
