How many worms should you get in a worm farm and what kind?

I started my worm farm almost 8 years ago and I mentioned I had made several purchases of worms (and they all ended up dead), because I was misinformed. You need at least 1,000 (or 1 pound) of worms to begin with and nothing less than that. I had started with 250 worms and when they weren’t producing and were dying off, I purchased 250 more, and then another 1,000 after that. When I started up the Can-O-Worms farm, I immediately started with 1,000 worms, or 1 pound. This has worked out great and they are producing constantly!
There are over 8,000 species of earthworms and they are grouped into 3 categories: Anecic, Endogeic, and Epigeic.

The species you want for worm farming is in the Epigeic group called Eisenia fetida. The common names are red wigglers, redworms, manure worms, tiger worms, brandling worms, and composting worms. These worms stay closer to the top surface where the decaying matter is and they poop a lot!
The next topic covered later is “How much should you feed, what should you feed, and how often should you feed the worms?”
