What temperatures can worms in a worm farm tolerate and when should you add the next tray?

What temperatures can the worms tolerate? Composting worms can tolerate temperatures in the range of 50 to 90 degrees. We keep our worm farm located in the laundry room all year long. We learned our lesson the hard way because one year, we put the worm farm outside in the summer, which was on the back porch (North side) and in the shade and all the worms died from the heat.
I’m told that in the summer if you see the temperatures creeping up beyond 90 degrees, you can remove the lid and hose down the whole farm or flush with water (while keeping the drain spigot open). I tried this the year all our worms died and won’t be taking that risk again.
When should you add the next tray? When the soil material gets full enough to make contact with the bottom of the next tray, you can add the next tray and start putting food in it. Make sure that your trays are seated and aligned correctly. If there is too much soil material that causes the tray above to be askew (see a photo of when my tray was too full), your worms will not be able to successfully travel into the new tray. Basically, make sure your tray is full before you add the next one, but not full enough to push your new tray out of alignment.

It is also recommended that you stop feeding the worms for at least a week before adding your next tray to ensure that all the existing food in the lower trays have been eaten. I have not done this because I have so many worms right now that they are in every tray!
